Tennis Sweeps North Texas, 4-0, on Friday

HOUSTON – In a match that was rescheduled twice due to weather, the University of Houston Tennis team swept North Texas, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.

The victory marked the first time the Cougars (2-0) opened their season with back-to-back wins since 2018 when they defeated Lamar (5-1) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-1). Houston swept its first two opponents of the season, a feat that the Cougars had not done since 2006, when they swept Prairie View A&M (7-0) and SFA (7-0).

After sophomores Iva Sepa and Valeriia Krokhotina dropped their doubles match on court two to Lilly Schultz and Stanislava Shulzhenk, 6-2, fifth year Santa Strombacha and sophomore Elizaveta Morozova knocked off Gianna Pielet and Stadfany Nformi, 6-1, on court one.

On the deciding court, juniors Sophie Schouten and Gabriela Cortes took down Lou Chalard and Marina Adati, 6-2, to give the Cougars the 1-0 advantage over North Texas (3-2) heading into singles play.

For the second match in a row, Schouten was first to the finish line as she defeated Charlard, 6-2, 6-4, on court five. It is the second consecutive season that Schouten bested Charlard as Schouten defeated her, 6-1, 6-3, last season in Denton, Texas.

On court one, No. 79 Strombacha held strong against Pielet, 6-3, 6-2, before Morozova clinched the match on court four as she defeated Olivia Malm, 6-1, 6-4.
