Houston Dominates Meet against Kansas

Cougars win 14 of 16 events, claim 34 podiums in first meet of 2025
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team dominated its first meet of 2025, defeating Kansas, 215.5-84.5, while winning every swimming event and clinching 34 podiums across the meet's 16 events.
The Cougars started the meet hot, sweeping the podium in the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Elizabeth Jimenez, senior Henrietta Fangli, junior Noor El Gendy and junior Liya Goupil took the top spot with a time of 1:42.32 with freshman Regina Torres Pomar, junior Virag Peter, senior Adelaide Meuter and senior Mary Catherine Jurica touching the wall just behind the lead relay for second place (1:45.56). Fifth-year Danielle Titus, sophomore Evelyn Entrekin, senior Abbie Alvarez and freshman Sienna Bruner claimed third with a 1:45.85.
Freshman Mariana Cote continued the quick start for Houston, leading a podium sweep in the 1,000-yard freestyle by swimming a 10:17.91 for first place. Sophomore Sydney Nethercutt placed second (10:22.86) and freshman Kaeli White (10:36.31) to complete the sweep.
Houston claimed first and second place in the next three events. Jurica won her first individual event of the meet in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.20 while freshman Elizabeth Benoit tied for second with a 1:54.41. The Cougars took another 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke as Jimenez claimed the top spot (55.99) and Torres Pomar earned second (56.67). Fangli and Entrekin placed first and second with times of 1:02.47 and 1:03.24, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Cougars dominated in the 200-yard butterfly, clinching the top five spots in the event. El Gendy won with a time of 2:01.40 with Nethercutt (2:03.72) and freshman Kristina DiPietro (2:03.95) completing the podium. Meuter finished fourth (2:05.85) and junior Isabella Lojewski earned fifth (2:06.50).
Goupil followed up for Houston, winning the 50-yard freestyle with a 23.54 while sophomore Michelle McLeod and fifth-year Hedda Grelz finished the 3-meter diving competition in second (307.50) and third (282.53). Goupil immediately won another event after a break, swimming a 51.01 in the 100-yard freestyle for first place, while Bruner claimed second (52.48) in the same event.
Jimenez (2:01.34), Titus (2:01.92) and Torres Pomar (2:03.93) earned another 1-2-3 finish for Houston in the 200-yard backstroke while Fangli took first (2:18.32) and Entrekin earned third (2:19.58) in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Cote won her second event of the meet with a time of 5:04.04 in the 500-yard freestyle with Nethercutt taking second with a 5:06.47. El Gendy also earned her second individual win in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 55.28, followed by Meuter in third (56.80).
McLeod and Grelz again took second (285.15) and third (264.08) in the 1-meter diving competition, while sophomore Nora Hetyei won the last individual swimming event with a time of 2:07.10 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Houston claimed first and third in the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Goupil, Jurica, Bruner and Entrekin took the top spot with a 3:27.25 while junior Jenna Kerkman, freshman Alexandra Curcan, Benoit and Jimenez touched the wall in third with a time of 3:32.70.
