
Cougars Capture Six Victory on Day One of FIU Invite

Houston earns five singles and one doubles victory on Friday
MIAMI, Fla. – The University of Houston Tennis team opened day one of the FIU Invitational with five singles and one doubles victories on Friday at the PayCargo Tennis Center.
Fifth-year Santa Strombacha highlighted the day with a 6-0, 6-3 win over FIU's No. 80 Ekaterina Khairutdinova for the highest rated win in her career.
Sophomore Iva Sepa earned the clean sweep over FAU's Milllie-Mae Matthews, 6-3, 7-5. Fellow sophomore Elizaveta Morozova defeated FIU's Panna Bartha, 7-5, 6(4)-7, 6-2. Juniors Sophie Schouten and Gabriela Cortes also earn victories as Schouten defeated Anja Drasovic, 7-6 (10-8), 5-7, 6-2, and Cortes beat Missouri's Karina Roso, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Strombacha and Sepa were the lone doubles victors with a 6-3 victory over FIU's Khairutdinova and Valery Gynina.

Houston continues play at the FIU Invite on Saturday before opening the regular season and a four-match homestand when it hosts North Texas at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 19, at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.

The Cougars will play a doubleheader against Portland and UT Arlington at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, on Sunday, Jan. 26, before finishing the homestand against Tarleton State at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31.
