Wes Fritz reflects on his father, Head Coach Willie Fritz’s impact, on and off the field
By: Wes Fritz, Houston Football Director of Player Personnel/Pro Liaison
On Father's Day, Houston Football Director of Player Personnel/Pro Liaison Wes Fritz reflects on his upbringing and what it has meant to learn from and work for his father, Houston Football Head Coach Willie Fritz, over the years.
Growing up, every free moment my dad had outside of Football he spent with our family. Any games I had or events my sisters had, he made sure to adjust his schedule so he could attend.
He's always had an open-door policy for staff members' families to be around the office. Some of my earliest memories were being able to go to the office and be around players and staff.
I've learned a lot from my dad including the importance of staying the course and having an even keel approach no matter the situation or what is in front of you.
After I graduated from Sam Houston State, I first worked for my dad when I was a graduate assistant with recruiting at Georgia Southern. It was great to be in the same building as him and work on his staff. I had already learned a lot being around his teams/staff growing up but being around him daily taught me more than I could ever imagine.
He is very consistent and organized. It's a huge reason for his successes. He has a plan for every facet of the program. He has also coached at nearly every level including high school, Division II, FCS, Group of 5 and now Power 4. He has worn a lot of hats throughout his career – strength coach, academic advisor, athletic trainer, driven the team bus, etc. – he has done it all. Because of that, he has a deep appreciation for what every member on the staff does day in and day out to help us win.
When he first told me about the prospect of coaching at the University of Houston, I was excited. It would be an amazing opportunity at the Power 4 level. It was a no brainer.
Dad, on Father's Day, I just want to thank you for everything you have done for our family and the example you have set. Looking forward to another great season together.
