Houston wins Don Sanders Cup behind pitching, pair of bats
Houston (26-26) has hit home runs in seven consecutive games after seniors Cary Abrolida and Justin Murray nearly hit identical home runs to right field in the second and sixth innings, respectively. The duo helped Houston jump out to a 4-0 lead through the top of the eighth inning.
Arbolida kept his scorching hot hitting streak chugging along with a two-run home run in the second inning. The left fielder extended his career-long hitting streak to 11 games while homering in three-straight games.
Murray hit his seventh home run of the season in the sixth inning. A solo home run that mirrored Arbolida's opposite field shot. Murray has three home runs in the previous four games after hitting two home runs in the series opener at Kansas on Friday.
In his second collegiate start, freshman Richie Roman spun a career-high 4.0 innings of scoreless work while striking out a career-high six Bearkats.
Junior right-handed pitcher Graysen Drezek (2-0) turned heads out of the bullpen, spinning a career-high 3.0 scoreless innings while striking out a career-high four batters while allowing just two baserunners.
Sam Houston (30-22) loaded the bases in the eighth inning and plated a trio of runs. Murray (5) slid over to the mound to record the final two outs of the inning to keep Houston's lead intact. The righty proceeded to set down the Bearkats in the ninth. Murray moved into a tie for the third-most saves all-time in Cougar history with 15.
The Cougars finished the season finishing the season 11-3 in midweek action and 5-1 in trophy series play after sweeping Rice in the Silver Glove Series and winning the Don Sanders Cup 2-1.
