Beautae goes 3-for-4 with three runs and a homer in tough loss to Texas Tech
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team had the winning run on-base in the seventh inning, but ultimately came up short in a 7-6 loss to Texas Tech at Cougar Softball Stadium on Friday night.
Graduate Shelby Smith (10-12) threw three innings and allowed five hits while taking the loss in the circle for the Cougars (23-25, 3-19 Big 12). Senior Maddy Wright (10-7) spun a complete-game victory, allowing 12 hits and six runs (five earned).

Game Highlights
● After scoring four to bring its season total to 301, Houston eclipsed 300 runs on the season for just the fifth time in program history.
● Junior Lair Beautae posted her 25th career multi-hit game while junior Turiya Coleman recorded her 12th of the season.
● Graduate Bree Cantu earned her 24th career multi-RBI game.
● Houston has tallied 11 games with multiple home runs this season.
● Beautae moved into a tie for eighth on Houston's single-season runs scored list with 46 runs on the year.
● Cantu moved into a tie for seventh on Houston's single-season list with her 35th walk of the season.
Key Innings
1st | Texas Tech struck first on Friday night with a pair of homers in the first inning. Following a senior Riley Love solo shot, junior Demi Elder hit a two-run blast to put the homer to cap the inning.
3rd | The Red Raiders added another run in the third as senior Abbie Orrick hit her ninth homer of the season.
Houston got on the board with a solo home run of its own in the bottom of the inning as Beautae hit her eighth home run of the season.
4th | After Texas Tech scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-1 in the top of the fourth, Houston shrunk the gap back to two as Cantu hit a two-run homer to left field that also plated graduate Kennedy Thomas.
7th | Houston and Texas Tech traded runs in the fifth and sixth, setting up a seventh inning with Texas Tech ahead 6-4. The Red Raiders hit their fourth homer of the game to push its advantage back to three, but Houston wouldn't go quietly in the bottom of the inning.
Beautae doubled to lead off the home half of the frame and reached third as graduate Jazmyn Rollin singled to shortstop. Coleman drove home Houston's first run of the inning with a single through the left side. Following a passed ball, the Cougars had a pair of runners in scoring position and Rollin came home and scored on a graduate Kennedy Thomas groundout. Ultimately, the rally came up short as a Texas Tech challenge resulted in the third out, sealing a 7-6 Red Raider victory.

Houston continues its final home series of the year against Texas Tech at 2 p.m., Saturday before a noon, Sunday, finale. Prior to Saturday's game, the Cougars will honor its graduating seniors Katy Repa, Amanda Carden, Paige Hulsey and Taylor Edwards while Smith, Cantu, Rollin and Kennedy Thomas will be distinguished before Sunday's contest.
