PREVIEW: Houston Begins Play at Big 12 Championship Wednesday

(14) Cougars face (3) Sooners in the first round at 3 p.m.
STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Houston Tennis program opens play in the Big 12 Championship against #18 (3) Oklahoma at 3 p.m., Wednesday, at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Houston (2-18, 0-13 Big 12) enters the championships as the 14-seed and meets the three-seed Sooners (16-5, 11-2 Big 12) for the second time this season, with Oklahoma taking the first meeting, 4-0, in the Third Ward (March 17). Oklahoma is Houston's 12th ranked opponent this season.
Four Cougars have each earned four singles victories this season, with sophomore Gabriela Cortes picking up a pair of wins in conference play. Sophomores Sonya Kovalenko and Sophie Schouten pace Houston with seven wins in doubles action, all of them on court one.
No. 31 Julia Garcia Ruiz leads the Sooners with a 17-1 singles record. Roisin Gilheany and Dana Guzman enter the tournament as the nation's 20th ranked doubles pair and a 10-2 record on court one.
LAST TIME OUT
The Cougars wrapped up the regular season with a pair of road matches, falling at No. 54 Kansas, 4-0, on Friday and 5-2, at Iowa State on Sunday.
After being awarded a singles point due to a forfeit, Cortes secured a point against the Cyclones as she took the final two sets against Valeska San Martin, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
