Cougars Fall in Regular Season Finale

Houston enters the Big 12 Championship as the 14-seed and plays the 3-seed beginning Wednesday
AMES, Iowa - In its regular season finale, the University of Houston Tennis program tell, 5-2, to Iowa State at the Ames High Tennis Complex on Sunday.
DOUBLES
Houston (2-18, 0-13 Big 12) held and early advantage as the Cyclones forfeited their third doubles pair but failed to claim the doubles point.
On court one, sophomores Gabriela Cortes and Sophie Schouten dropped their match to Anna Kuearum and Ashlee Narker, 6-2.
Iowa State (4-16, 2-11 Big 12) clinched the doubles point when Valeska San Martin and Juliette Nask defeated senior Laura Slisane and junior Maria Dzemeshkevich, 6-3.
SINGLES
The match was immediately tied as sophomore Sonya Kovalenko won in a forfeit on court six, before Iowa State reclaimed the lead on court one as Kuearum swept Dzemeshkevich, 6-1, 6-2.
On court two, Slisane fell to Narker, 6-3, 6-1, to put the Cyclones within one of clinching the match.
After being shut out in the opening set, Schouten fought back to take the second, 6-1, before falling in the final frame, 6-2.
Houston grabbed its second point as Cortes bounced back to take the final two sets against San Martin, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Iowa State took the final point of the afternoon as Gala Arangio defeated junior Elena Trencheva, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.
UP NEXT
The Cougars open play as the No. 14 seed and will take on the No. 3 seed at 3 p.m., Wednesday at the Big 12 Tennis Championship from the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.
