
Glawe Leads Men’s Golf during Thunderbird Collegiate First Day

Junior tied for seventh at -5; Reily, Chen join him among Top-20 leaders entering Final Round
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in a tie for third place following the first day of the Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Club on Friday.
In a two-day, 54-hole tournament featuring five of the nation's Top-15 teams and 10 of the Top 50, the Cougars posted a team score of 5-under 279 in the morning and joined UCLA at 562 on the 7,551-yard, par-71 course.
Play was suspended late in the Second Round with eight teams still playing their final three holes. Those schools will complete their Second Rounds beginning at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) Saturday before Final Round play starts.
Junior Wolfgang Glawe fired a 66 in the First Round and was tied for seventh at 4-under with three others. Starting off No. 1, he moved under par with a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole and drained the team's lone eagle of the day on the 487-yard, par-4 seventh hole. The St. Leon-Rot, Germany, native close his front nine with a birdie at No. 9.
Glawe added another birdie at No. 12 and, following his lone bogey of the round at No. 13, sank a birdie at No. 15 before three straight pars to finish with a 66.
Super senior Austyn Reily and freshman Chi Chun were tied for 20th at 1-under. Reily enjoyed a pair of rounds of par or lower while Chen enjoyed a 69 in the afternoon session.
Junior Jacob Borow was tied for 33rd at 1-over while junior Laurenz Schierge was tied for 84th at 8-over. Playing as an individual, freshman Grant Doggett was tied for 84th with four holes remaining.
Host Arizona State held the team lead at 545 with Arizona in second at 558. Oregon State (-5), Oklahoma (-2), Oklahoma State (-1), Utah (-1), Texas Tech (-1) and Washington State (E) rounded out the Top 10 teams.
Individually, Arizona State's Preston Summerhays held the lead at 9-under 133 to stand three shots ahead of teammates Wenyi Ding and Michael Mjaaseth and Arizona's Tony Xiong. UCLA's Pablo Ereno and Arizona State's Ryggs Johnston were tied for fifth at 137.

This week, Houston will be without the services of senior All-American Santiago De La Fuente, who is competing as an amateur at The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club.
De La Fuente earned his place in The Masters by capturing the title at the Latin America Amateur Championship at Santa Maria Golf Club in Panama City, Panama, in late January. He posted scores of 66-64 during the final two rounds to earn medalist honors by two strokes.
In addition to his invitation to The Masters, De La Fuente also received exemptions as the Latin America Amateur Championship medalist to play in the 2024 U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club (Course No. 2) in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C., on June 13-16 and 2024 The Open Championship, set for Royal Troon Old Course in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland on July 18-21.

The top five teams and top individual not on a qualifying team at each NCAA Regional advance to the NCAA Championships set for Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., on May 24-29.
