
PREVIEW: Men’s Golf Continues Hosting Duties at Valspar Collegiate Invitational

Houston to tee it up against six Top 10 teams at two-day, 54-hole event
PALM CITY, Fla. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program will compete in one of the nation's most prestigious collegiate tournaments when it tees off at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian National Golf Club on Monday morning.
The Valspar Collegiate Invitational annually features one of the nation's top team fields, and the 2024 edition is certainly no different. Eleven of the 16 schools competing rank among the Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll Top 25 with six inside the Top 10 and two others receiving votes.
Teams will play 36 holes Monday, beginning with a 7:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start with the Final Round teeing off at 7:30 a.m. (CT) Tuesday.
Admission is free to all, and everyone is invited.

ABOUT THE COUGARS
Under the leadership of Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, the Cougars will be represented by senior Santiago De La Fuente, senior super senior Austyn Reily, junior Jacob Borow, junior Wolfgang Glawe and freshman Chi Chun Chen. Freshman Grant Doggett and junior Laurenz Schiergen will play as individuals.
As a team, the Cougars have produced four Top-5 finishers this season led by De La Fuente's 69.80 scoring average. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native owns three Top-5 results in five tournaments including his third-place result last time out at the All-American Intercollegiate.
Reily ranks second on the team with a 72.07 scoring average highlighted by a fifth-place finish at the Border Olympics (Feb. 19-20). Borow looks to build on his three Top 15 finishers including a 14th place result last time out.

The Cougars will compete in a 16-team field against #1 North Carolina, #3 Vanderbilt, #4 Arizona State, #8 Texas Tech, #9 Alabama, #10 Florida State, #13 Oklahoma, #14 Arkansas, #18 Texas, #22 Texas A&M, #25 Duke, rv Ohio State, rv Wake Forest, Lamar and South Florida.

For Monday's first-day action at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from #1 North Carolina, #3 Vanderbilt and #4 Arizona State.
Reily will start the day in the first group off No. 1 with De La Fuente (second group off No. 1), Borow (No. 2), Glawe (No. 3) and Chen (No. 4) following.
Schiergen begins his day in the first group off No. 18 with Doggett (second group off No. 18) following.

LAST TIME OUT
De La Fuente climbed eight spots up the leaderboard, firing a Final Round 67 to finish tied for third at 4-under, 212, among the 100-member field at the 54-hole All-American Intercollegiate from the Golf Club of Houston.
De La Fuente's 5-under, 67, on Tuesday matched Iowa's Ian Meyer (Final Round) and UNLV's tournament champion Yuki Moriyama (Second Round) for the lowest round at the event. The result helped the Cougars to a fifth-place result at 12-over, 876, among the 20-team field.
The result marked De La Fuente's third Top 5 result in five events this season. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native drained four birdies and an eagle during his Final Round. De La Fuente was joined in the Top 15 by Borow who continued his ascent with a 1-under, 71, on Tuesday, to finish tied for 14th at 2-over, 218. The Lake Jackson, Texas, product sunk three birdies during a four-hole stretch while vaulting eight spots up the leaderboard.
The Top 5 finisher was Houston's third on the season. The Cougars were second among six Big 12 Conference competitors in the field, trailing only Texas Tech, who captured the team title at 7-over, 871, thanks to four competitors finishing inside the Top 30.
UP NEXT
Following the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian National Golf Club, the Cougars will head west to compete at the Thunderbird Intercollegiate at Papago Golf Club in Tempe, Ariz., on April 12-13. That will be the team's final regular-season event before heading to the Big 12 Championships.
