HOUSTON – A day after capturing the first Big 12 championship in school history, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and senior point guard Jamal Shead led the #1/1 University of Houston Men's Big 12 postseason award honorees, released by the league office on Sunday evening.
Sampson was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year while Shead was honored as both the Big 12 Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year. Shead also was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and the All-Defensive Team.
Senior guard LJ Cryer was named to the league's Second Team while senior forward J'Wan Roberts earned a place on the Third Team. Sophomore guard Emanuel Sharp and junior forward Ja'Vier Francis received Honorable Mention with forward Joseph Tugler receiving honors on the All-Freshman Team.
ABOUT KELVIN SAMPSON
Now in his 35th season overall and his 10th season at Houston, Sampson has placed the Cougars among the nation's elite during his tenure.
Sampson led the Cougars to a 28-3 overall record and the Big 12 regular-season title by two games over runner-up Iowa State. Houston has been ranked among the nation's Top 10 in both poll throughout the entire season and currently leads the country in the Associated Press and USA TODAY Sports Coaches polls, ESPN BPI rating and KenPom ranking.
Houston's defense leads the nation in in scoring defense (56.9 ppg, 1st) and turnover margin (7.4, 1st) and ranks among the country's Top 10 in field goal percentage defense (38.3, 2nd), turnovers per game (8.7, 4th), scoring margin (+17.3, 2nd) and steals per game (10.3, 7th).
Under Sampson's leadership, Houston has been ranked for a school-record 82 consecutive weeks, including each of the last 37 weeks in the Top 10, another program best.
"First, this is a team honor. Part of our secret sauce is our coaching staff. I have been able to keep this staff together, and that has been a big part of our success," Sampson said. "One of the things I enjoy most is putting a team together and getting them to play for each other. That doesn't happen unless everyone is connected. This is very much a shared award."
This marks the third straight season in which Sampson was named the Conference Coach of the Year and the fifth time in the last seven years.
During his career, Sampson has been named a Conference Year of the Year nine times from five different leagues. That total includes one Big 12 (2023-24), four American Athletic (2022-23, 2021-22, 2018-19 and 2017-18), one Big Eight (1994-95), one Pac-10 (1990-91) and two Frontier League (1984-85, 1982-83).
ABOUT JAMAL SHEAD
Shead has been a leader for the Cougars throughout his career and never more so than during the 2023-24 season.
With Sunday's awards, he became the first player in Big 12 history to collect Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors in the same season.
The Manor, Texas, native stands second among the Cougars with 13.2 points per game. Shead also leads Houston and ranks among the Big 12 Top-Five leaders in assists per game (6.2, 3rd), steals per game (2.3, 3rd) and assist-turnover ratio (3.14, 2nd).
Shead is the only student-athlete to rank among the nation's Top-20 leaders in all three categories.
"This is such a blessing. Both awards mean so much to me," Shead said. "Being on the best team made it easy, and I want to thank my teammates. They allowed me to be the best version of myself I could be all season."
"A point guard's greatest statistic is did his team win, and Jamal cares more about winning than any individual statistic. He is an unbelievable extension of our coaching staff. He knows where everyone should be. He pays attention to everybody's responsibilities, so he can correct them on the floor when needed. That is the epitome of a leader," Sampson said. "In my 35 years, he is the greatest leader I have ever coached."
Shead twice was named the Big 12 Player of the Week and was recognized as the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week for Feb. 26 and the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for Jan. 23.
Shead has scored double-digit points in 22 games, including eight of the last nine. He also dished out 10+ assists in four games this season with a career-high 29-point, 10-assist performance at #21/19 BYU on Jan. 23. He is the only Cougar to record points-rebounds AND points-assists double-doubles in 2023-24.
Shead owns a 116-16 record in more than three seasons during his Houston career and needs only six more victories in 2023-24 to become the winningest player in school history.
Shead became the third Cougar in the last four years to be named Conference Player of the Year joining guard Marcus Sasser (2022-23, American Athletic) and guard Quentin Grimes (2020-21, American Athletic).
He also collected his second straight Conference Defensive Player of the Year award, joining forward Bo Outlaw as the only Cougars to accomplish that feat.
ABOUT LJ CRYER
Cryer is in his first season at Houston in 2023-24 after transferring from Baylor during the summer.
The Katy, Texas, native has started all 31 games to date this season – making him one of only two Cougars to accomplish that feat – and leads Houston and the league with 3.10 3-point field goals per game. Cryer also stands among the Big 12's Top 10 in scoring (15.7 ppg, 7th), field goal percentage (41.0, 7th) and 3-point field goal percentage (38.9, 4th).
A product of Morton Ranch High School, Cryer tops the Cougars with 11 20-point games, including a season-high 25 points against in Houston's come-from-behind win at Big 12 rival UCF on Wednesday, and has drained multiple 3-pointer in 24 games, including each of the last seven and nine of the last 11.
Averaging 16.7 points, 3.7 3-pointers and 2.7 rebounds per game in wins over Towson, Utah and Dayton, Cryer was named the Most Valuable Player at the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic in November 2023.
This is Cryer's second postseason conference honor. He was named to the 2022-23 All-Big 12 Third Team as a junior at Baylor before transferring to Houston.
ABOUT J'WAN ROBERTS
In 2023-24, Roberts has started all but one game and snared 6+ rebounds in all but eight contests.
The St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, native leads Houston with five double-doubles, including 20-point, 13-rebound performance at TCU on Jan. 13 and added 11 points and 13 rebound at #8/9 Kansas on Feb. 3
Roberts ranks sixth in the Big 12 with 7.0 rebounds per game and is one of only three players to rank among the league's Top-10 leaders in both offensive AND defensive rebounding. Robert ranks third with 2.8 offensive rebounds per game and stands 10th with 4.2 defensive boards per contest.
During his career, Roberts has posted a 113-17 record to stand as the third-winningest player in school history and is tied with Shead for the program record with 62 victories inside Fertitta Center. He ranks 14th in Houston history with 776 rebounds.
This is the second straight season in which Roberts received postseason conference honors. As a junior in 2022-23, he was named the American Athletic Conference Most Improved Player of the Year and earned a place on the league's All-Tournament Team.
Roberts also was a member of the All-American Athletic Conference Second Team.
ABOUT JA'VIER FRANCIS
Francis is one of only three Cougars to start all 31 games to date this season and tops the Cougars with 1.5 blocked shots per game to stand fourth in the league.
He has grabbed at least five rebounds in 21 games with season highs of nine boards in wins over Dayton (Nov. 19, 2023) and Penn (Dec. 30, 2023) and snared at least five boards in 11 of 12 games midway through the season.
The New Orleans native has swatted multiple opponent shots in 13 games with a career-high five blocks against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Nov. 11, 2023.
Francis scored 10 points with eight rebounds, including a game-high six offensive boards in last week's win at UCF and enjoyed season highs of 13 points in wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State and Big 12 rival West Virginia.
This was the first conference postseason honor for Francis during his career.
ABOUT EMANUEL SHARP
Sharp has emerged as one of Houston's and the Big 12's leading 3-point shooters in 2023-24. He currently ranks seventh in the league with a 35.9 field goal percentage from behind the arc and is tied for eighth with 2.1 treys per contest.
He has drained at least one 3-pointer in all but four games with multiple treys in 20 contests. Sharp also set a personal best with 12 consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer entering this week's Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.
The Tampa, Fla., native ranks second among the Cougar with five 20-point games this season, including a 20-point effort behind five 3-pointers in the season-opening win at ULM. Sharp set a career high with 25 points in the Cougars' win vs. Jackson state on Dec. 9, 2023.
In addition to his long-range shooting, Sharp is one of the Cougars' leading performers at the free throw line, hitting 84.8 percent of his 112 attempts, including all 11 tries in a win over Texas State in Fertitta Center on Dec. 21, 2023.
This is Sharp's second conference postseason honor. He was named to the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team in 2022-23.
ABOUT JOSEPH TUGLER
Tugler made an immediate impact in his first season out of Houston's Cypress Falls High School in 2023-24.
The 6-foot-7 freshman competed in his first 29 games before being sidelined for the remainder of the season with a foot injury. Making the first start of his career inside Fertitta Center against Penn on Dec. 30, 2023, Tugler scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in the win.
He was third on the team with 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game and swatted multiple opposing shots in nine games.
In the Cougars' Jan. 29 win at Texas, Tugler snared an offensive board and flushed it to give the Cougars a 70-67 lead with only 72 seconds remaining in overtime.
This was Tugler's first collegiate award.
