Houston Drops Play4kay Game to #5 Texas

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball program fell to #5 Texas, 82-66, inside Fertitta Center on Wednesday evening.
Senior guard Laila Blair dropped 23 points, including her 1,500-career point, while knocking down one of her four 3-pointers. Blair is now the ninth all-time scorer in program history.
Junior forward Maliyah Johnson scored 12 points and shot 60% from beyond the arc (3-for-5), while graduate guard Britney Onyeje recorded 11 points to put her 54 points shy of 1,000 for her career.
Houston (12-12, 3-10 Big 12) hung with Texas (23-3, 10-3 Big 12) during the first quarter as Blair scored seven of her 23 points to keep the Cougars within three.
The Cougars opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take their only lead at 22-20. Texas responded as they closed the second period on a 19-2 run to take a 39-24 lead into the locker room.
The Longhorns grew their lead to 22, but Houston cut the deficit to as little as 13 as it outscored Texas 23-19 in the final frame.
Texas scored 54 of their 82 points in the paint, but Houston held the Longhorns to just two 3-pointers, while making eight of its own.

Houston hits the road as it takes on Oklahoma State at 4 p.m., Saturday, inside Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla.
The Cougars then return to Fertitta Center to host Iowa State at 7 p.m., Wednesday for their Black History Month celebration.
