Cougars struggle to contain Red Raiders attack in three-set loss
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team couldn't solve Texas Tech's offensive effort in a three-set loss on Saturday afternoon inside Fertitta Center.

The Red Raiders (13-12, 5-8 Big 12) hit .350 in the match while also adding seven aces. Houston (11-11, 6-6 Big 12) posted a .170 hitting efficiency, led by graduate Angela Grieve's 10 kills, her 19th match of the year with double digits in the category.

Redshirt junior Barakat Rahmon led the match with four blocks, surpassing 100 in her career. She has now amassed 101, including 87 stuffs this season.Â

Texas Tech shined out of the gate, never relinquishing the lead and only allowing three tied scores. Winning six of the first 10 points, the Red Raiders maintained a two-point edge at the media timeout, 15-13. A 5-0 run later in the frame allowed Texas Tech to clinch a 25-16 win in the opening set.Â

After evenly splitting the first four points of the second, Texas Tech strung together points to claim an 8-5 advantage. Houston answered with a 3-1 stretch that evened the score at 11-all. While tying again at 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14, the Red Raiders forced the media timeout at 15-14. Although Houston never allowed Texas Tech to claim more than a two-point lead and evened the score for the 12th time at 24-24 to force extra points, back-to-back Red Raider blocks would close the door on the set, giving Texas Tech a 26-24 win.Â

The third set again remained close early as the teams found themselves tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4. Back-to-back points after gave Texas Tech a 6-4 edge and although Houston fought back to even the score again at 12-12, the Red Raiders never fully gave up the lead for the remainder of the set, clinching the frame, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.Â

·       Graduate libero Kate Georgiades posted 15 digs, her 26th consecutive match with 10-or-more. She has 421 on the year, needing 78 more to tie for 10th on Houston's current era single-season list.
