Houston battles but drops match to Utah in straight sets
HOUSTON – Despite graduate libero Kate Georgiades recording her 55th career 20-plus dig performance, the University of Houston volleyball team fell in straight sets to #20 Utah on Thursday night at Fertitta Center.Â
Â
Senior outside hitter Katie Corelli led Houston on offense, posting a match-best 14 kills and a .375 hitting percentage, while graduate setter Annie Cooke recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 26 assists and 10 digs.Â
Â
While Utah jumped out to an early lead, winning nine of the first 15 points, Houston rallied to take a 15-12 advantage at the media timeout. The Utes clawed back, evening the match at 19-19, and after four tied scores, eventually won the opening frame, 25-23.Â
Â
The teams remained close to start the second. After evenly spitting the first 10 points, a 3-0 run gave Houston an edge, but Utah immediately responded with a 5-0 stretch to claim the lead. A later 4-0 run from the Cougars put Houston back in front, 13-12, but the Utes rallied to take a five-point lead at 20-15 and cruising to a 25-19 set win.
Â
The third frame saw each team trade blows throughout. The set was tied 11 times, including as late as 17-17, before a 3-0 Utah run put the Utes ahead for good, allowing Utah to clinch the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.Â
