Houston picks up fifth sweep of season behind 13 team blocks and six aces from graduate Annie Cooke
AMES, Iowa – Multiple Cougars posted exceptional nights as the University of Houston Volleyball team downed Iowa State in three sets at Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday night.
Graduate setter Annie Cooke tallied six service aces, tying the team's three-set record originally set by Gretchen Klug against Texas Southern on Sept. 9, 1987, and tied by Abbie Jackson at East Carolina on Sept. 30, 2022. She also added 27 assists, four blocks and six digs.
Houston's (11-10, 6-5 Big 12) defense also shined as the Cougars tallied 13 blocks against Iowa State (9-13, 3-8 Big 12). Freshman middle blocker Addisyn Pohl led Houston in the category, posting a career-high six (one solo, five assists) while redshirt junior Barakat Rahmon followed closely with five block assists.
Senior outside hitter Katie Corelli and graduate outside hitter Angela Grieve both earned 12 kills, with Corelli also earning a .478 hitting percentage. Graduate libero Kate Georgiades tallied her 25th consecutive match with double-digit digs, boasting 18 with an average of six per set.
Houston fell behind early in the first set as Iowa State took a 5-2 lead. A 4-0 run immediately after put the Cougars in front and another four consecutive points gave Houston a 13-10 edge. While the Cyclones used a late 4-0 stretch of their own to take a 21-19 edge, Houston won six of the last seven points to claim the set, 25-22.
The second frame remained even after 14 points before Iowa State scored four straight points to take the lead. Houston answered with a 3-0 stretch, but the Cyclones won the next five points to extend its advantage to 16-10. Still holding a six-point lead at 21-15, Iowa State was again on the wrong side of a Houston surge as the Cougars used a pair of 5-0 runs, winning 10 of the final 11 points to win the second, 25-22.
Looking to come home with a sweep, Houston held the momentum going into the third set, winning the first four points. A 4-0 and a pair of 3-0 runs later, the Cougars had a 16-7 edge that it maintained for the remainder of the match, winning the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-0.
