
Love Posts Double-Double, Women’s Basketball Routes Alcorn State

Six Cougars score double-figure points, Kierra Merchant records a career-high seven steals
HOUSTON – Behind graduate guard Eylia Love's double-double, the University of Houston Women's Basketball team dominated Alcorn State, 73-48, on Thursday night inside Fertitta Center.
Houston (2-3) had six players score in double figures and were led by sophomore guard Kierra Merchant's 13 points and a career-high seven steals. Love recorded her third career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Summer Bostock scored a career-high 11 points and fifth-year forward Peyton McFarland also posted 11 points against the Lady Braves. Redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke and graduate guard Laila Blair each scored 10 points of their own.
Nakia Cheathman posted a double-double for Alcorn State (1-6) with 12 points and 11 rebounds against Houston.
Both teams kept it close in the opening frame with three ties and Houston could only muster a four-point advantage. Merchant's driving layup gave Houston the 17-15 lead to end the quarter.
Cooke opened the second quarter with five-straight points to give the Cougars a 25-20 lead. As both teams struggled to score for more than three minutes, Merchant ended the drought with a jump shot, but Cheathman followed with two free throws to end the half with Houston in front, 29-25.
The third frame was a quarter of runs as Houston opened the half with a 6-0 run. Alcorn State countered with a 6-0 spurt, but the Cougars quickly halted the Lady Braves with a 16-1 run. Houston's offense lit up behind the arc as graduate guard Ashley Chevalier and Merchant combined for four straight 3-pointers.
Bostock scored all 11 of her points in the final frame to post a career high in points and 3-pointers made with three. The Cougars used two 5-0 runs and an 8-0 surge to put the game out of reach for the Lady Braves.

Houston will close its homestand against North Texas at 2 p.m., Sunday, for its Pediatric Cancer Awareness game. Fans 12 and under can enjoy a postgame meet and greet on the court with select players.
The Cougars head to New Orleans for the Big Easy Classic - Bayou Tournament, where they will face Minnesota on Friday, Nov. 29 at 1:15 p.m., and Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 3:30 p.m., inside the Alario Center.
