Cougars pick up first win over the Bearcats at home in 20 years
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball program captured a 54-46 win over Cincinnati inside Fertitta Center on Tuesday evening. This marked Houston's first win over Cincinnati at home in 20 years.
Houston's (12-9, 3-7 Big 12) defense came to play as they converted 23 Cincinnati (10-10, 2-7 Big 12) turnovers into 23 points. The Cougars recorded eight blocks, including a season-high four blocks for senior forward Peyton McFarland.
Three Cougars scored in double figures, including senior guard Laila Blair with 15, graduate guard N'Yah Boyd with 11 and senior forward Kamryn Jones with 10. Blair has scored in double figures in 19 of her 21 games this season.
Boyd was the first to put points on the scoreboard with a field goal igniting a 6-0 run for Houston. Fighting through the Cougars' defense, the Bearcats closed the gap and tied the game at 11 at the end of the first quarter.
Houston recorded five team blocks in the second quarter and went on a 5-0 run, ending the first half with the Cougars leading 26-24.
The Cougars finished strong as Boyd scored five points to open the fourth quarter, extending Houston's lead to eight. Jones knocked down two jumpers during the final minutes to put the game out of Cincinnati's grasp.
NOTES
Houston returns to the Fertitta Center to host #13/15 Baylor at 2 p.m., Sunday for its BLACKOUT game.
The Cougars then travel to Lawrence, Kan. to face the Jayhawks on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m. inside Allen Fieldhouse.
