Houston Defeats Louisiana in Season Opener

Cougars earn fifth-straight win over Ragin’ Cajuns
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program began the 2024 season defeating Louisiana, 4-3, at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility on Sunday afternoon.
Houston (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) earned the doubles point along with singles victories on courts one, three and six. Louisiana (0-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) made a late push as they claimed points on courts two, four and five.

DOUBLES
Sophomore duo Sophie Schouten and Sonya Kovalenko knocked off Carla Urchoeguia and Angelique Berrat on court one, 6-4. On court two, Louisiana's Kamea Medora and Paige Duncan defeated Laura Slisane and Maria Dzemeshkevich, 6-4.

It all came down to court three as senior Blanca Cortijo Parreño and sophomore Gabriela Cortes ousted Jenaila Prulla and Nina Krecklenberg, 6-4, to claim the doubles point.

SINGLES
On court one, Slisane made quick work of Urchoeguia, 6-1, 6-1. Cortijo Parreño earned the second singles point of the afternoon on court six as she defeated Krecklenberg, 6-2, 6-l.

Louisiana's first point of the afternoon came as Karolina Skowronska battled freshman Nina Skoric on court five, 7-5, 6-4. Schouten knocked off Prulla, 7-6 (6-3), 6-2 to clinch the match for the Cougars.

After Houston clinched the match, Louisiana picked up two additional singles points as Cristina Tchanichev outlasted Dzemeshkevich, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, while Medora defeated Cortes, 7-5, 6-2.

Houston hits the road to take on North Texas at 10 a.m., Sunday at the Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton, Texas.

The Cougars return to the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility as they welcome UTRGV on Friday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m., and close out the weekend against Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m.
