Cougars look for fifth-straight win over Mean Green
DENTON, Texas – The University of Houston Tennis program travels for its first road match of the season as it faces North Texas at 10 a.m., at the Waranch Tennis Complex on Sunday.
The Mean Green (2-1, 0-0 AAC) enter Sunday's meeting winning back-to-back matches over Southeastern Oklahoma State and New Mexico State.
LAST TIME OUT
Houston (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) defeated Louisiana, 4-3, in its season opener. The Cougars earned the doubles point along with singles victories on courts one, three and six.
Sophomore duo Sophie Schouten and Sonya Kovalenko knocked off Carla Urchoeguia and Angelique Berrat on court one, 6-4, and senior Blanca Cortijo Parreno and sophomore Gabriela Cortes ousted Jenaila Prulla and Nina Krecklenberg, 6-4, to claim the doubles point on court three.
In singles on court one, senior Laura Slisane made quick work of Urchoeguia, 6-1, 6-1, and Cortijo Parreno earned the second singles point of the afternoon on court six as she defeated Krecklenberg, 6-2, 6-1.
Schouten knocked off Prulla, 7-6 (6-3), 6-2, to clinch the match for the Cougars.
SERIES VS NORTH TEXAS
The Cougars lead the all-time series, 8-2, with Houston taking the last four meetings. Houston is undefeated against North Texas in Denton.
The latest meeting with the Mean Green came last season with a 4-1 Cougar victory (April 14, 2023). Houston picked up the doubles point and relied on singles points from Schouten, Slisane and Maria Dzemeshkevich to secure the match.
