Senior point guard earns first Big 12 regular-season award in program history
HOUSTON – After helping lead the fifth-ranked University of Houston Men's Basketball program to a pair of home wins in Fertitta Center last week, senior guard Jamal Shead was honored as the Big 12 Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. In wins over #25/25 Texas Tech and UCF, Shead led the Cougars with 19.5 points, 7.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game and finished third on the team with 5.5 rebounds per contest. The Manor, Texas, native buried 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field while playing more than 33.0 minutes per game.
With Houston Athletics' move to the Big 12 Conference in 2023-24, he became the first Houston Men's Basketball player to earn a Big 12 regular-season weekly accolade.
Shead started the week in impressive fashion as the Cougars looked to end a season-long two-game losing streak against #25/25 Texas Tech on Wednesday. After connecting on two of his first five shots, he sank all but one of his final 11 shots on the way to a career-high 29 points.
The senior also added 10 assists with only two turnovers and four rebounds in the eighth double-double of his career.
Shead, who is majoring in health, scored 10 points, led all players with five assists and tied for the team lead with seven rebounds and four assists in a 57-42 win over UCF inside Fertitta Center on Saturday. He anchored a defense which allowed only seven UCF field goals in the game and limited the Knights to 15.9 percent (7-of-44) shooting, setting a Big 12 record for low field goal percentage in a conference game.
This season, Shead is one of only three student-athletes to rank among the nation's Top-40 leaders in assists per game, steals per game and assist-turnover ratio. He owns a 104-15 record during his Houston career and needs only six more victories in 2023-24 to become the second-winning player in school history.
Kansas State's Arthur Kaluma was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
