Women’s Basketball Earns First Big 12 Win Over BYU

Three Cougars post double-figure points in 79-69 victory
HOUSTON – Behind 20 points from senior guard Laila Blair, the University of Houston Women's Basketball program earned its first Big 12 Conference victory after defeating BYU, 79-69 on Wednesday evening at Fertitta Center.
Houston (10-5, 1-3 Big 12) opened the game on a 13-3 run as five different Cougars scored. Graduate guard Britney Onyeje knocked down a pair of triples to take a 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After BYU (10-7, 0-4 Big 12) went on an 8-0 run to begin the second quarter, Houston responded with a 10-0 run of their own, spearheaded by five points from freshman guard Kierra Merchant.
Senior forward Kamryn Jones posted four of her career-high eight steals in the opening two minutes of the third quarter to set a new women's basketball Fertitta Center record. Blair also posted nine of her 20 points in the frame.
BYU clawed its way back into the game to get within four at the 4:35 mark in the fourth quarter. Blair made seven of Houston's nine free throws in the final frame to seal the first Big 12 win in program history.
NOTES
The Cougars host rv/rv TCU at 2 p.m., Saturday before heading to Morgantown, W. Va. to take on the #24/rv Mountaineers at 6 p.m. CT Wednesday.
