Three-touchdown first half propels freshman to Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award
HOUSTON – Houston Football freshman running back Parker Jenkins reeled in Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week honors Monday following his three-touchdown performance in the Cougars' non-conference finale against Sam Houston over the weekend.
In his first career start, Jenkins rushed for 105 yards on 20 carries and found the endzone three different times – all in the first half. The freshman became the first Cougar in program history to have three rushing touchdowns in his first start. His three touchdowns in a half also matched the program record
The kinesiology-sports administration major is the line Power 5 freshman to score three rushing touchdowns in a single game. He is also just the third Big 12 freshman this year with a 100+ yard rushing performance.
Jenkins combination of power and speed burst through a Sam Houston defense which had allowed only three touchdowns in two games this season. The Houston native becomes the second Cougar to earn all-conference honors in as many weeks with kick returner Matthew Golden bringing in Special Teams Player of the Week honors last Monday thanks to a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown against TCU.
UP NEXT
Houston will meet Texas Tech at 2:30 p.m., Sept. 30, inside Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas. It will be the Cougars' first Big 12 road game.
That game will air on FS2 and can be heard on 950 AM KPRC.
