Cougars tee off at Sam Golden Invitational, beginning Monday morning at Oakmont Country Club

CORINTH, Texas – The University of Houston Women's Golf program will open its 2023-24 season when it tees off at the Sam Golden Invitational, beginning Monday at the 6,413-yard, par-72 Oakmont Country Club.
This will be the first of four fall tournaments for the Cougars. Schools will play 36 holes Monday beginning at 8:30 a.m., with the Final Round starting at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday.
A year ago, Houston earned six Top-Four team finishes and competed at the NCAA Pullman Regional for the program's eight NCAA team postseason appearance.

MEET the COUGARS
Under the leadership of Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Gumm, Houston will be represented by sophomore Alexa Saldana, freshman Maelynn Kim, sophomore Moa Svedenskiold, senior Nicole Abelar and freshman Ellen Yates. Junior Hyeonji Kang will compete as an individual.
The only senior on the 2023-24 team, Abelar enters her third season with the Cougars. The Manila native came on strong in the second half of the 2021-22 season, posting four Top-20 finishes in her final five events, including a 10th-place showing at the Trinity Forest Invitational (March 6-7, 2022), thanks to a Final-Round 67.
Svedenskiold was an All-Conference member in her first season at Houston in 2022-23 after posting a team-best 71.73 scoring average with 21 rounds of par or better, including nine in the 60s. The Halmstad, Sweden, native was named the American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Month in October 2022 after winning the Jim West Challenge, becoming the quickest Cougar in school history to earn medalist honors.
Saldana also competed in her inaugural collegiate campaign last season and posted a 17th-place finish at the MountainView Collegiate (March 17-19, 2023). The Mexico City native also earned a place on the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.
Kim, Yates and Kang each will make their Houston debuts in the season opener. Kim and Yates were award-winning prep stars while Kang is competing in her first season with the Cougars after transferring from Hawai'i during the summer.
TEAM FIELD
Houston will compete at the Sam Golden Invitational against BYU, Charlotte, Kennesaw State, Missouri, Nebraska, TCU, Texas Tech, Tulane, Tulsa, UTSA and host North Texas.
PAIRINGS
For Monday's First Round, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from North Texas, Texas Tech and Charlotte.
Saldana starts the day for the Cougars off No. 1 at 8:30 a.m. with Kim (No. 2, 8:30 a.m.), Svedenskiold (8:30 a.m., No. 3), Abelar (No. 4, 8:30 a.m.) and Yates (No. 5, 8:30 a.m) following. Kang begins her round at 8:30 a.m., off No. 18.

Following the Sam Golden Invitational, the Cougars continue their fall schedule when they compete at the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Okla., on Sept. 23-25.
