Kamassah Brace Propels Cougars to Home Opener Victory

Houston earns first 2023 victory against Southeastern Louisiana
The Cougars (1-0-1) outshot the Lions (1-1) 22-8 for the afternoon, including an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Kizer opened the score for the Cougars at minute 16 from a corner kick that went past the line, earning the freshman's first collegiate career goal.
Soon after in the 31st minute, senior Caitlyn Matthews scored the second goal of the match from distance. This marks Matthews' fifth career goal with the Cougars.
Five minutes later, Southeastern Louisiana fired back as Mya Guillory found the back of the net in the 36th minute to bring the score, 2-1.
Houston continued knocking at Southeastern Louisiana's door in the second half and found its third goal of the afternoon in the 65 minute. Weber started off the action on the right side with a solid pass out of the back, followed by Juliet Moore grabbing possession to put it in the path of Kamassah to give Houston the 3-1 lead.
Off a corner kick in the 71st minute, Moore began another scoring play by sending the shot towards the right post, with Weber heading the ball in to give Houston a 4-1 advantage. This goal marks Weber's first career goal.
In the 81st minute, Southeastern Louisiana earned a dangerous free kick to earn their second goal of the afternoon. Kelsey Fuller headed in the free kick to bring the score within, 4-2.
One minute later, Kamassah added the final goal of the afternoon off an assist from Maddie Bowers to seal the 5-2 victory for the Cougars.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will hit the road for their third match of the season as they face Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m., Thursday in Nacogdoches, Texas. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
Houston will close out its August home slate on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m., as it hosts Tarleton State for Dads & Daughters Day.
