Houston hosts nine conference matches, including the reigning national champions twice
HOUSTON – The University of Houston volleyball team hosts a packed conference schedule at Fertitta Center in its first season in the Big 12 Conference, including Texas, the reigning national champions, TCU and UCF. The schedule, released on Tuesday, signals a new era for both Houston and Houston Volleyball as the program shifts leagues.Â
Â
Houston will play every Big 12 team including six home matchups and six road outings. Half of the league matches are a series played on consecutive days (i.e., Friday/Saturday) and half are single matches. The schedule includes four teams ranked in the final poll of 2022 and seven 2022 NCAA Tournament teams. The Big 12 Conference also tallied the highest conference RPI in the 2022 season with a combined 162-104 record, the best in NCAA Division I.
Â
The Cougars kick off their inaugural Big 12 season in Provo, Utah, for a match against fellow league-newcomer BYU on Sept. 20. The team then remains on the road for a series against Kansas on Sept. 29 and 30.Â
Â
Houston hosts its first conference foe in West Virginia for a series on Oct. 6 and 7, followed by a visit from reigning National Champions Texas on Oct. 13 and 14. The Cougars close the first half of conference play on the road at Texas Tech on Oct. 20 and 21.
Â
Head Coach David Rehr's squad heads to a familiar foe in Cincinnati for a Oct. 28 match, then returns home to play UCF, who the Cougars split a conference championship with in 2022, in a series on Nov. 3 and 4. After heading to Norman, Okla., for a series tilt against OU on Nov. 9 and 10, Houston arrives back in the Fertitta Center to play TCU (Nov. 15) and Iowa State (Nov. 17).Â
Â
The Cougars wrap up their road schedule on Nov. 22 with a trip to Waco, Texas, to battle Baylor. Houston concludes its conference schedule on Nov. 25 against Kansas State inside the Fertitta Center.
Â
Like the American Athletic Conference, the Big 12 does not have a volleyball tournament with the regular season champions receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.Â
