Houston men look for seventh American Athletic Conference outdoor crown, women look for third
HOUSTON – The University of Houston track and field team looks to return to the top of the podium at the American Athletic Conference Championships Friday-Sunday in Tampa, Fla., as the Cougars compete at the American Championships one last time before joining the Big 12 Conference. Â

STARTING LINE NOTES
- Houston currently owns eight individual conference-leading marks heading into the conference championships and leads both men's relays.
- The Cougars have 44 top eight marks in the conference. The top eight individuals in each event score points towards the team totals. The team with the most points wins the conference title.
- Houston has had a male individual win the 100- and 200-meter dashes six-straight years and in seven of the eight championships.
- Junior De'Vion Wilson looks to defend his 110-meter hurdles title and defend Houston's unbeaten streak in the event.
- The Cougars men's 400-meter relay has won the event at every American Conference Championships.
- Senior Christyan Sampy looks to reclaim his pole vault title that he won in 2021.
- Senior Jadon Brome seeks a three-peat in the triple jump.
- Senior Benjamin Okafor leads the conference in the long jump and would be Houston's first conference champion in the event since 2018 were he to win.
- Senior Trey Johnson looks to be Houston's first 400-meter dash winner since Jermaine Holt event in 2021.
- A male Cougar has won the 400-meter hurdles the past three championships.
- The women seek their first individual conference titles in any event for the first time since 2021.
- Senior Cecilia Tamayo-Garza is the only competitor in the American to go under 23 seconds in the 200-meter dash this season. Tamayo-Garza would be just the second Cougar to win the event and win Houston's third-ever gold medal in the event (Brianne Bethel won the 200 in 2018 and 2021).
- The men have won seven American Athletic Conference outdoor team titles and the women have won two.
