
Adejokun Takes Third, Duo Post Top Prelim Times

Hammer thrower finishes third, pair run fastest times, 10,000 postponed
TAMPA, Fla. – Graduate Priscilla Adejokun finished third in the women's hammer and senior Lusekelo Mwamukonda finished fifth in the men's hammer as the Houston track and field team opened up the American Athletic Conference Championships on Friday.
Houston's first point scorer of the weekend, Adejokun scored six points for the women by finishing third overall in the hammer throw. The graduate from Melissa, Texas threw 59.45 meters on her third throw of the competition.
On the men's side of the hammer, Lusekelo Mwamukonda scored four points or the men by finishing fifth overall. Mwamukonda set a new personal record, throwing 49.70 meters on his third throw of the day. The senior improved his #10 all-time program best mark by 0.17 meters.
In the heptathlon, freshman Ali Mack set personal bests in three of the four first-day events, posting all-time bests in the 100-meter hurdles (14.11), 200-meter dash (25.68) and shot put (10.69).
Junior Ayomide Ogunbunmi and freshman Donovan Brooks opened up the decathlon with strong marks. Ogunbunmi had a great day in the decathlon high jump by jumping 1.89 meters. The junior also posted top five marks in the shot put (11.94 meters) and 400-meter dash (51.33). Ogunbunmi sits in sixth following the first five events. Brooks finished third in the shot put (12.36 meters) and sits in 10th following the first five events.
Houston posted the fastest preliminary times in two of three preliminary round events in the evening. Junior Shaun Maswanganyi ran the fastest 200-meter dash time of the day (20.63) and senior Sydni Townsend ran the fastest 400-meter hurdles (57.15).
Townsend ran a personal record by 0.20 seconds, which moves her into sole possession of the #2 time in program history.
The 10,000 meters, slated for 8:35 p.m., was postponed to Saturday morning due to lightning.
UP NEXT
The Cougars continue competition at the American Athletic Conference Championships in Tampa Saturday and Sunday. Competition on Saturday gets underway at 8 a.m. with the 10,000 meters.
