Cougars score 17 runs in rubber match to tie for top of American Conference
Houston Baseball clubbed its way to a record-setting 17-3, seven-inning victory, claiming the three-game series against Wichita State thanks to 13 two-out runs in the seventh inning Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Â
With the result, the Cougars (17-15, 4-2 American) are tied for the top spot in the American Athletic Conference. The Shockers, who managed just four hits, fell to 17-13 overall and 3-3 in American play. Houston sophomore starter Cade Citelli (2-3) tossed 5.0 innings, surrendering only one earned run alongside eight strikeouts. Shockers' starter Grant Adler (3-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits across 5.0 innings.
Houston has won 12 of its last 16 games on the season. The Cougars have won their first two American series of 2023 and seven of their last 10 league series dating to the 2022 season. The 14-run margin of victory was the Cougars largest in a conference road matchup since replicating the feat as part of a 15-1, 7-inning victory on April 27, 2014, at Cincinnati.
Game Highlights:
- The Cougars tallied 13 runs in the top of the seventh inning. It was the first time Houston has scored 10+ runs in an inning since May 17, 2016 when Houston plated 10 in the eighth inning as part of a 24-6 victory against No. 15Â Rice.
- All 17 of Houston's runs came with two outs including 13 in the seventh inning. All 10 Houston players who recorded an at-bat scored at least one run.
- Four players registered multiple hits while five players recorded multiple RBIs.
- Houston batted .455 (15 for 33) on the day including a .643 (9 for 14) clip with two outs. The Cougars hit .909 (10 for 11) with runners in scoring position.
- Both relief pitchers threw clean innings. Kyle Ayers pitched one inning with no hits while Owen Woodward struck out the side to close the game.
- Zach Arnold and Justin Murray extended their reached base streaks to 28 straight games. Arnold has reached base in every single game he has played in while Murray has found his way on base in every game his second Cougar appearance.
- Starting pitcher Cade Citelli tied his career high with eight strikeouts while not allowing a hit through 4.0 innings.
