Houston evens series with Sam Houston in Don Sanders Cup

Whitting, who is in his 13th season as the head coach of the Houston baseball team, has been a part of 21 conference titles and competed in 17 NCAA Regionals, six NCAA Super Regionals and one College World Series during his coaching career. His accolades span across 27 years of coaching experience and include four Coach of the Year Awards. In addition to his achievements at the college level, Whitting has tutored 90-plus student athletes who have been selected in the MLB Draft and 25 who have gone on become Major Leaguers. Â Â Â

The Cougars (18-14, 4-2 American) were aided by a four run fifth inning followed by a six run sixth inning as Houston evened the season-long series with Sam Houston State (20-14) in the Don Sanders Cup. Â Houston's Brendan O'Donnell (2-0) secured his second win of the season tossing 1.1 hitless innings with one strikeout while the Bearkats Marshall Wales (1-4) took the loss.

Game Highlights:
- Zach Arnold and Justin Murray extended their reached base streaks to 28 straight games. Arnold has reached base in every single game he has played in while Murray has found his way on base in every game his second Cougar appearance.
- For the second straight game, the Cougars have scored double-digit runs as well as hits
- Head coach Todd Whitting recorded his 400th career win. His overall record stands at 400-302-1.
- Both Alex Lopez and Brandon Uhse tallied two doubles in the game while Malachi Lott contributed one.Â

1st | The Cougars answered the call in the bottom of the first inning after the Bearkats plated two runs in the top of the inning. Third baseman Zach Arnold was the first Cougar abroad singling to left center. Junior utility player Alex Lopez followed it up with a long double giving Arnold enough time to cross the plate. A Brandon Uhse single through the right side moved Lopez all the way to home plate for a 2-2 game. But, Houston was not done scoring as junior catcher Anthony Tulimero plated his own single also moving Uhse to the third bag. Utility player Justin Murray tallied Houston's fifth hit of the inning singling to right field to bring Uhse home for a 3-2 lead.

5th | Houston asserted its dominance in the bottom of the fifth scoring four runs. With the bases loaded Uhse registered his second hit of the night doubling down the right field line to bring two runners' home and give Houston a 6-3 lead. It wasn't long before Tulimero hit a sacrifice fly and Murray singled to bring two more runs home for a 7-3 lead.

6th | Houston continued its scoring momentum tallying six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior shortstop Ian McMillan started the inning by singling up the middle before Bianco drew a walk. Outfielder Malachi Lott registered an RBI double before Arnold tacked on a two RBI single. Back-to-back doubles brought two more runners' home and Murray recorded the final RBI of the inning hitting a sacrifice fly to right field.

Houston plated one more run in the bottom of the seventh and sophomore relief pitcher Dan Wright struck out the side in the top of the ninth to close the game at 14-3.

The Cougars welcome South Florida to Schroeder Park on Friday for their third week of American Athletic Conference play.
