Lamar outlasts Houston with late burst as Cougars fall 4-2
HOUSTON – University of Houston Baseball was limited to six hits by 10 Lamar pitchers, falling 4-2 in the program's home midweek finale on Tuesday night from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park. The defeat was Houston's first in midweek action in nearly one month.Â
Â
The Cougars (23-18) struggled with two outs (1 for 10) but found themselves in a position to rally, scoring one on a one-out double from freshman Thomas Lyssy in the ninth inning to trim the deficit to two before Lamar junior reliever Kole Tauzin used three pitches to record two outs and strand Lyssy at third while earning his second save.
Â
Lamar (22-18) produced 12 hits and batted .412 (7 for 17) with runners aboard. Houston sophomore starter Kyle Ayers (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing one run on five hits alongside three walks and a pair of strikeouts.Â
Â
Key Innings:
4th | Lamar took advantage of a leadoff walk, using a pair of hits including an RBI-single from senior Ben MacNaughton to take a 1-0 lead, ultimately chasing Ayers.
Â
5th | The Cardinals doubled up their lead courtesy of three singles with junior Kanin Dodge shooting a run-scoring base hit up the middle for a 2-0 lead. Houston junior reliever Owen Woodward escaped further damage, inducing a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
Â
6th | Houston answered back in the sixth but was limited to one run despite three hits. Senior Ian McMillan led off with a single before juniors Zach Arnold and Alex Lopez connected on one-out base hits. Junior Anthony Tulimero brought home McMillan via a sacrifice fly, cutting the Cougar deficit to 2-1.
Â
8th | Lamar pushed its advantage to three runs, helped by Cougar miscues. Senior Josh Blankenship came across on a wild pitch. With two away, senior nine-hole hitter Kirkland Banks delivered an RBI-single into center field.
