
Men’s Golf Extends Lead at The American Championships

Cougars lead by 10 strokes entering Sunday’s Final Round; Senior Austyn Reily, junior Santiago De La Fuente tied for individual lead at 7-under 133
BELLEAIR, Fla. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program posted its second straight sub-par round with a score of 278 to push its lead to 10 strokes following the Second Round of the American Athletic Conference Championships at Pelican Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.
The 49th-ranked Cougars finished with a team total of 2-under 578 Saturday for a two-day total of 10-under 550 on the 6,881-yard, par-70 course. Houston held a 10-shot lead over SMU with Memphis (561), UCF (564) and South Florida (565) rounding out the Top-Five leaders.
For the second straight day, senior Austyn Reily and junior Santiago De La Fuente recorded rounds in the 60s and finished Saturday's play tied for first at 7-under 133.
De La Fuente led the Cougars on Saturday with a 67, thanks to five birdies. Starting off No. 1, the Guadalajara, Mexico, native overcame a bogey on No. 3 with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6-7.
After five pars and a bogey, De La Fuente erupted with three birdies in a 4-hole stretch on Nos. 14-17 and capped the day with a par at No. 18.
A day after setting a Houston record in a conference championships with a 64 in Friday's First Round, Reily continued his stellar play in the Second Round. The Pottsboro, Texas native sank four straight birdies on Nos. 3-6 and capped his front nine with another birdie.
Reily added two more birdies on his back nine to finish with a 69 and join De La Fuente atop the individual leaderboard at 133.
Playing on his birthday, super senior Braxton Watkins drained birdies on three of his first six holes and posted a 70 to tie for 26th at 144. Sophomore Wolfgang Glawe was tied for 20th at 143 while sophomore Jacob Borow was tied for 26th at 144.
South Florida's Nino Palmquist and Temple's Ethan Whitney were tied for third at 136 while Williams Sides (137) and Lucas Augustsson (East Carolina) were tied for fifth at 137.
The Championships concludes with the Final Round beginning at 7 a.m. (CDT) Sunday.

The 2023 NCAA Regionals will be held at six sites across the nation on May 15-17: Auburn University Club (Auburn, Ala.); Eagle Eye (Bath, Michigan); Bear's Best Las Vegas (Las Vegas); The Institute Golf Club (Morgan Hill, Calif.); Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (Norman, Okla.) and The Cliffs at Keowee Falls (Salem, S.C.).
The Top Five teams and the low individual not on a qualifying team at each NCAA Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 26-31 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The Cougars will learn their NCAA postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show. That show will air at Noon, Wednesday, May 3, on Golf Channel.
