Cougars looks for series win in rubber match on Sunday
Â
Despite losing the contest, the Cougars (22-17, 7-4) are currently the top seed in the American Conference after East Carolina lost both games of a doubleheader against Wichita State earlier today. Both teams sit at 7-4 in conference play, but Houston has the edge after winning the series against the Pirates earlier this season.
Â
The Tigers' (20-19, 4-7) Dalton Fowler (5-3) worked 6.0 innings retiring five batters in his fifth win of the season while Houston's starting pitcher Malachi Lott (0-3) threw 3.0 innings giving up three runs for the loss.
Â
Game Highlights:
- Zach Arnold extended his reached-base streaks to 35 straight games. He has reached base in every single game he has played in this season.
- The Cougars continued to turn multiple double plays recording three against the Tiger. It is the fourth in six games that Houston has turn multiple double plays.
- Zach Arnold: 2-4, 2 R, 2B
- Anthony Tulimero: 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR
4th | After two silent innings from the two teams, Memphis plated the first three runs of the game in the bottom of the third. It was immediately met in the top of the fourth by Houston's offense. Junior utility player Alex Lopez drew a full count walk before junior catcher Anthony Tulimero connected with the ball and sent it far beyond the left field fence. The 2-RBI home run decreased Memphis' lead and brought the score to 3-2. However, Memphis continued to score in the bottom half of the inning bringing home two more runs pushing its lead to 5-2.
Â
The Tigers continued their momentum in the sixth innings bringing home four runs for a 9-2 lead. Houston managed a two-out run in the top of the ninth but it was not enough and the Cougars took the 9-3 loss.
