Houston earns midweek victory to begin critical five-game non-conference homestand
With the win, the Cougars (5-7) notched their second straight midweek victory. Houston's 17 runs were its most since plating 18 against Tulane on May 24, 2018. Prairie View fell to 2-11 on the early season and dropped its fifth consecutive contest.
Eleven different Cougar batters logged a hit and 12 total reached base. Houston batted .419 (13 for 31) with runners aboard and .500 (8 for 16) with two outs. Cougar pitching limited the Panthers to four hits including just one (1 for 8; .125) with two away.
Houston reliever Graysen Drezek (1-1) earned his first win of the season thanks to a 1-2-3 frame. Prairie View starter Matthew Krall (0-1) was saddled with the loss after permitting six runs (five earned) on as many hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

- Houston leadoff batters reached five times in eight opportunities. The Cougars scored in six of eight frames including multiple runs in five different innings.
1st | The Cougars wasted little time, taking advantage of a leadoff walk and ensuing base hit from third baseman Zach Arnold. Three straight Houston hitters drove in runs courtesy of right fielder Malachi Lott (RBI-double), catcher Anthony Tulimero (sacrifice fly) and left fielder Cameron Nickens (RBI-groundout).
3rd | Houston tacked on three more in the third as the first four reached in the frame including an RBI-single from Nickens. Second baseman Thomas Lyssy reached on a one-out fielding error, allowing two to score in Nickens (single) and Tulimero (single).
4th | The Cougars opened things up in the fourth courtesy of five two-out runs. Houston's five hits included a two-run triple from Lyssy who scored one batter later on a wild pitch. Nickens drove home the innings first run on an RBI-double. Center fielder Drew Bianco used an infield single to plate Nickens.
6th | Houston needed just one hit and capitalized on a Prairie View walk and error to push across its 12th run. Shortstop Ian McMillan's two-out single and ensuing error brought in Bianco who reached on a one-out walk.
7th | The Cougars hung another crooked inning in the seventh, sending seven batters to the plate as part of a three-run frame. Pinch hitter Cary Arbolida delivered a two-run single and three batters later, Lyssy smoked an RBI-single into center.
8th | Houston added two runs in the eighth on a Nate Price sacrifice fly and Arbolida walk. With a pair of hits in the frame, the Cougars finished with 17 on the day.
