Houston unable to hold off Vaqueros, drops UTRGV series
EDINBURG, Texas – Sophomore starting pitcher Malachi Lott allowed just one run against UTRGV but it would not be enough as the Cougars fell 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at UTRGV Baseball Field.
In his first weekend start on the mound, Lott (0-1) tossed a career-high 5.0 innings but took the loss for the Cougars (4-7). Colten Davis (1-0) earned his first win of the season for UTRGV (8-3) thanks to 7.0 scoreless innings.
Player Highlights:
3rd | The first run of the game didn't come until the third inning as the Vaqueros brought a runner across on a fielder's choice for a 1-0 advantage.
7th | Back-to-back singles from junior first baseman Justin Murray and junior catcher Anthony Tulimero started the inning strong for the Cougars. A fielder's choice from Lott pushed Murray to third before Lott stole second to put two in scoring position for Houston. It was not enough as the Cougars left the base-runners stranded.
Despite 3.0 scoreless inning from sophomore pitcher Josh Ekness, Houston was unable to get a run across in the top of the ninth inning and the Cougars ultimately took the 1-0 loss.
