Cougars undone by Mavericks, return to action Saturday against Northwestern

Houston (10-12) pitching allowed eight home runs and its offense slowed following a combined 25 runs in two midweek victories. UT Arlington (10-12), which entered the weekend at No. 55 in the RPI, was led by redshirt junior Matt Lumsden's five RBIs.

Cougar starter Maddux Miller (2-1) permitted five runs on as many hits in 1.2 innings. UT Arlington junior starter Gabe Starks (3-0) earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) alongside five hits in 5.0 innings.

Game Highlights
- Houston registered five hits including a 1-for-2 performance from redshirt senior Ian McMillan who logged the Cougars' lone RBI. Houston right-handed freshman Matt Canizares did not allow a hit across the final 2.0 innings.
- Junior utility player Justin Murray logged his 18th game reaching base safely while junior infielder Alex Lopez continued his hitting streak with nine games.Â
1st | UT Arlington clubbed three home runs in the first inning including a leadoff homer from junior Garrison Berkley. Freshman Ryan Black and redshirt sophomore Cade Sumbler went back-to-back before Miller retired the final two hitters.

2nd | The Mavericks struck for two more homers an inning later, chasing Miller from the matchup. Redshirt junior Wilson Galvin led off the frame with a homer to left before Berkley logged his second long ball in as many innings for a 5-0 lead.

4th | UT Arlington added three more in the top half including a two-out, two-run homer for Sumbler before the Cougars clawed back in the home half thanks to a sacrifice fly from redshirt senior Ian McMillan, plating sophomore Brandon Burckel (single) and junior Justin Murray (walk) thanks to an errant throw from right field.

5th | A timely, two-out grand slam from redshirt junior Matt Lumsden broke things open in the fifth. The Simpsonville, S.C., native drove his first pitch over the wall in left field to put UT Arlington ahead 14-2.

UP NEXT
Houston returns to action from Schroeder Park at 6:30 p.m. Saturday when it faces Northwestern in the lone matchup between the two programs. The day will feature two games with UT Arlington and Northwestern squaring off at 1:30 p.m. Only one ticket is needed for admittance to both contests.
