Houston Takes on McNeese, Southern in Midweek Matchups

HOUSTON – The Houston baseball team travels to McNeese for a midweek matchup on Tuesday before returning home for a contest against Southern on Wednesday.

SERIES HISTORY. The Cougars round out a four game road trip with their 23rd meeting with McNeese. Houston holds a 17-5 record over the Cowboys including a 3-2 win last year in Lake Charles, Louisiana breaking a three-game losing streak against McNeese. The Cougars will then host Southern on Wednesday who Houston holds a 1-0 record against as the teams meet for the first time last season.

LAST TIME OUT. The Cougars earned their first sweep of the season beating Minnesota in a three-game set. Houston managed a 5-3 win over the Golden Gophers on Sunday.

STARTER STRETCH. Houston's starting pitchers on Friday and Saturday against Minnesota threw 6.2 innings each. Maddux Miller made a shutout appearance on Friday earning the win and a career-high in innings and strikeouts at five. Paul Schmitz followed it up on Saturday also producing a quality start and a career-high seven strikeouts.

HAPPY HOMER. Justin Murray played hero for the Cougars over the weekend hitting a two-run home run in the top of the ninth Saturday to tie the game. Houston eventually won 4-2.

PROBABLE PITCHERS. Relief pitcher Brendan O'Donnell is currently ranked No. 14 in the nation for pitching appearances with 11.

REACH SAFELY. Zach Arnold is currently on a 19 game streak for reaching base safely. Justin Murray has also reached safely in 15 games while Alex Lopez is on a six game hitting streak.

REGIONAL OPPONENTS. For their fifth midweek, the Cougars will play regional opponent McNeese. Houston has played UTSA, Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M and Texas A&M in previous midweeks holding a 2-2 record. This will also be the first week Houston will play two midweek games, hosting Southern on Wednesday.

STEALTHY STEALING. Entering the eighth game of the season, the Cougars were a perfect 12 for 12 on stolen bases. Houston now sits at 25 for 28 stolen bases on the season and ranks No. 43 nationally. The charge is led by Brandon Burckel who is ranked 40th in the nation with 11
