Game Notes | Houston | Minnesota |
SERIES HISTORY. Houston heads to Minnesota for its first ever competition at the U.S. Bank Stadium. Previously, the Golden Gophers made the trip to Houston in 2015 where the Cougars swept Minnesota in a three-game series.
LAST TIME OUT. Houston faced in-state rival Texas A&M in a midweek match-up where the Cougars held the Aggies to a 2-1 score through eight innings before surrendering three in the top of the ninth.
EXCELLENT EKNESS. Junior pitcher Josh Ekness earned his first start for the Cougars on Tuesday against Texas A&M. It was his 15th career start but the first for Houston. The Texas native pitched a career-high 6.2 innings striking out four batters and allowing only two earned runs for his first quality start in the Red and Scarlett.
NFL STADIUMS. The Cougars will make its first appearance at an NFL Stadium since 1995 when Houston played at the Louisiana Superdome, now the Caesars Superdome, where the New Orleans Saints play.
PROBABLE PITCHERS. Both Josh Ekness and Brendan O'Donnell are ranked No. 14 in the nation for pitching appearances with nine each. Cade Citelli and Malachi Lott also rank No. 18 in the nation in starts with four apiece.
FINDING THE RIGHT ONE. The Cougars have had 14 different starting lineups since the beginning of the season, relying on two of them twice. However, captains Anthony Tulimero and Ian McMillan have been a part of the lineup in every single game. Other familiar starters including Zach Arnold, Justin Murray, Brandon Burckel and Alex Lopez.
POWER 5 OPPONENTS. This will be the fifth Power 5 opponent Houston will face this season and the first at the opponents home field. The Cougars have welcomes Cal (Pac 12), Oklahoma (Big 12) and Texas A&M (SEC) to Schroeder Park while also facing Utah (Pac 12) in a neutral site game. Houston will face one more this season in Northwestern next weekend at home.
