Softball Battles McNeese in Midweek Game

Cougars play their last midweek of March in Lake Charles, La.
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball program, in the middle of a 16-game road swing, heads to Lake Charles, La., for a midweek game against McNeese.
The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday. It's the Cougars last midweek matchup of the month and preludes the team heading to Waco, Texas, for a three-game series against #21/#20 Baylor.

THE SERIES
- Houston is 14-10 all-time against McNeese. Under Coach Vesely, the Cougars are 3-5 against the Cowgirls.
- Houston is 3-3 in the last six meetings dating back to 2018, however McNeese is on a three-game winning streak.
- The teams have another meeting scheduled for this year, with the Cowgirls visiting Houston on April 11.
- Three of the eight contests under Vesely have reached extra innings, with Houston winning two of those games.
FIRST PITCH
- Turiya Coleman enters the weekend with multiple stats among the best in the NCAA. Nationally, she ranks ninth in hits (37), 18th in batting average (.481), 21st in total bases (60), 23rd in doubles (8) and 36th in stolen bases (13).
- Kenna Wilkey was named the The American weekly honor roll following a 2-0 weekend at Tarleton. In 12.1 innings in the circle, she allowed zero earned runs, helping the Cougars to a pair of shutouts, while striking out 13.
- Houston was placed at #87 in RPI entering the midweek matchup. RPI is released by the NCAA every weekday morning. The Cougars rank fourth in The American in RPI, behind Wichita State, UCF and South Florida, all three being 2021 NCAA tournament teams.
- The Cougars boast one of the tougher nonconference schedules in the conference. Nationally, Houston has the 58th strongest schedule, only behind UCF's 55th toughest schedule in The American.
- The Cougars return 14 members of their 2022 team while welcoming seven new players to the squad, including three transfers.
- Houston plays 16 home games and no away games in the month of February, followed by 16 neutral site/away games and no home games in March. Houston is the only known school to have played its opening month at its home stadium, followed by an entire month away from it.
- Houston ranks 29th nationally with 0.46 double plays per game and 49th with five shutouts.
- The Cougars are playing their last season in The American prior to joining the Big 12 Conference next season.
- Kenna Wilkey picked up a pair of preseason honors, being named the preseason American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year by both D1Softball and Extra Innings Softball.
