Softball Falls Short in Midweek Matchup

Cougars can’t overcome McNeese’s offensive surge
LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of Houston softball team dropped its midweek matchup to the McNeese Cowgirls, 9-1, in five innings on Wednesday evening at the Cowgirl Diamond.
Ja'Naiya Thomas and Paige Hulsey led the way for Houston's offense. Each went 2 for 3, while Hulsey scored a run. Brooke Lorenzo went 1 for 2 with an RBI.
McNeese took the lead in the first inning. A triple off the bat of Crislyne Moreno plated a pair for the Cowgirls. Moreno scored later in the inning on a passed ball to put McNeese up 3-0.
A single from Lorenzo that scored Hulsey got the Cougars on the board in the second, but McNeese quickly added another two runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to four.
The Cowgirls added another run in the third, with Kaylee Lopez scoring on a double-steal attempt to put McNeese up 6-1.
McNeese clinched the run-rule win in the fifth, stringing together five hits to score three runs, earning the 9-1 victory.
NOTABLES
· With a walk in the third inning, Coleman has reached base in 24 of Houston's 25 games so far this season. She's reached in each of her last nine games.
· Repa has reached in eight straight games, while Cantu has a three-game hitting streak.
UP NEXT
Houston travels to Waco, Texas, for a three-game series against #21/#20 Baylor. The series begins at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. Saturday game. The weekend concludes with a 1 p.m. Sunday contest. Friday and Saturday's games will be streamed on Facebook, with Sunday's match being broadcast on ESPN+.
