Cougars post fifth shutout of 2023 to win the series against Tarleton
Bree Cantu paced the Houston (12-12) offense in the rubber match, going 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Britaney Shaw hit two doubles, the second time this season that a Houston player hit two in a game, and and drew a pair of walks.
Houston used a pair of RBI doubles in the first inning off the bats of Shaw and LA Matthews to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. The Texans (14-13) threatened to respond in the bottom half of the frame by loading the bases, but the Cougars shut them down to keep Tarleton off the scoreboard.
The Cougars added another run in the third. With Paige Hulsey on third, Brooke Lorenzo dropped a sacrifice bunt to allow Hulsey to score, putting Houston up by three.
Still riding a combined no-hitter with Mattie Boyd, Wilkey surrendered her first hit of the game in the fourth, but kept Tarleton off the scoreboard to keep the shutout intact.
Houston kept its offense firing in the fifth with Cantu's fourth homer of the year, a two-run blast to left that scored Turiya Coleman to put the Cougars up 5-0.
Wilkey continued to deal for the rest of the game, finishing with seven strikeouts and earning her seventh win of the season. She combined with Boyd for the shutout, the team's fifth shutout of the season.
