Sooners Surge Late as Cougars Drop Middle Game

Houston upended as squad looks to salvage series finale
The Cougars (5-9) were limited to four hits and went 0-for-8 with two outs. Freshman right-hander Paul Schmitz (0-1) struck out six batters but allowed five runs (all earned) on three hits while issuing three walks. The Sooners (10-5) earned their eighth win in the last nine contests thanks to a strong start from right-handed graduate student Braxton Douthit (2-0) who did not allow an earned run and held the Cougars to two hits over 7.0 innings.

1st | Houston jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning thanks to consecutive doubles from juniors Zach Arnold and Alex Lopez after senior Brandon Uhse reached on a fielding error to begin the bottom half.
2nd | Oklahoma tied things up as sophomore Jason Nicklaus drew a full count walk before stealing second and third. He would come home to score on a one-out groundout.
6th | After cashing in on extra-base hits to take the lead, Oklahoma broke things open with a four-run sixth inning which saw seven batters come to the plate including freshman Easton Carmichael who clubbed a two-out, three-run home run for a 7-1 lead.
8th | Houston bounced back with a pair of runs in the eighth using singles from Arbolida and sophomore Brandon Burckel. The duo came around to score thanks to a pair of Oklahoma miscues including a passed ball and wild pitch.
UP NEXT
The teams wrap the three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday from Schroeder Park. The matchup will be Kids Day and Family Day.
