Cougars meet Owls for second time in 2022-23 regular season at 5 p.m. (CST) Sunday in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA – Winners of 12 of its last 13 games, the #3 University of Houston Men's Basketball program continues a challenging stretch on the road when it meets American Athletic Conference rival Temple at 6 p.m. (EST) Sunday inside the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.
The Cougars look to split the regular-season series against the Owls after Temple took a 56-55 win inside the Fertitta Center in Houston on Jan. 22. That loss snapped a six-game winning streak against the Owls.
Sunday's game features the Top-Two teams in the American Athletic Conference in 2022-23. Houston leads the league with a 9-1 mark while the Owls are a game back at 8-2.
Sunday's game comes in the middle of a tough stretch in the schedule for the Cougars, who are playing three of four games on the road. After Thursday's road win at Wichita State and Sunday's game at Temple, the Cougars host Tulsa on Wednesday inside the Fertitta Center before traveling to SMU on Jan. 16.
The Cougars enter this weekend's game following a tough 70-61 win at Wichita State on Thursday. Trailing by as many as seven points in the second half, the Cougars close the game on a 19-7 run to move to 21-2 overall and 9-1 in American play.
This season, senior guard Marcus Sasser leads the Cougars and ranks eighth in The American with 16.2 points per game. Although he became the 50th member of Houston's career 1,000-Point Club and is closing in on the school record for 3-pointers, the Dallas native is far more than a scorer.
Sasser leads Houston and ranks sixth in the league with 1.8 steals per contest and joins junior point guard Jamal Shead among The American's Top-Five leaders in assist-turnover ratio with a 2.11 mark.
For his impressive play all season, Sasser has been named to the Wooden Award Late Season Watch List, the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Midseason Watch List and the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List.
