Cougars earn their second extra-inning victory of the season
Bree Cantu played the role of extra-inning hero, driving home the winning run in the 10th inning. Cantu and Britaney Shaw hit back-to-back home runs to lead the Houston (9-6) offense. Cantu finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs.
Sophomore Turiya Coleman used a single in the first inning to extend her hitting streak to 10 games. She's also reached base in all 15 of Houston's games this season.
Sam Houston grabbed the lead first, scoring an unearned run after capitalizing on Houston's lone defensive error.
The Cougars responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. With two runners on, Cantu hit her third home run of the season to center field. Shaw immediately followed it up with her own solo shot to put Houston up 4-1.
Houston added another run in the second as Paige Hulsey drove home Emma Robertson to extend the team's lead to four.
The Bearkats shrunk the gap with a run in the third, but the Cougars responded in the fifth as Hulsey scored on a Cantu single.
Sam Houston rallied for four runs in the seventh to tie the game. The Bearkats used three walks and two hits to even the score at 6-6 and send the game to extra innings.
With neither team able to break the deadlock after nine innings, the international tiebreaker was used in the 10th. Houston started its half of the inning with Ja'Naiya Thomas on second and, after a Coleman walks, Thomas reached third when Hulsey grounded into a fielder's choice.
Cantu entered the batter's box next and sent a line drive single into left-center that allowed Thomas to score, giving Houston a 7-6, walk-off victory.
Hannah Blincoe earned the win for Houston in the circle, moving to 2-0 on the season.
