
Three Cougars Finish Among Top-10 Leaders at Bayou City Collegiate Classic

Santiago De La Fuente tied for second, Campbell Gibson tied for fourth, Austyn Reily ties for eighth
HOUSTON – University of Houston Men's Golfers Santiago De La Fuente, Campbell Gibson and Austyn Reily finished among the Top-10 leaders to lead the Cougars during the Final Round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Westwood Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
De La Fuente fired a 69 in the Final Round, thanks to five birdies, and tied with Rice's Jay Kirchdorfer for second at 8-under 208.
Competing in his first team event as a Cougar, Gibson enjoyed his third straight round of par or better with a 70 and tied with Lamar's Hugo Hellman for fourth at 209.
Reily enjoyed the Cougars' low round of the day with a 68 and tied for eighth with Oral Roberts' Jared Strathe at 211.
As a team, the Cougars enjoyed the second-lowest team score of the day and moved into second with a score of 16-under 848 on the 7,184-yard course. It tied as the program's best finish of the 2022-23 season after finishing second at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, on Feb. 13-14 to open the spring campaign.
De La Fuente started the Final Round with a birdie on No. 1 and added another birdie at No. 5. The Mexico City native started his back nine with birdies on two of his first three holes and added his final one at No. 18 on the way to his team-leading sixth Top-15 showing of the season.
Like Reily, Gibson began his Final Round with a birdie on No. 1 and added two birdies in a three-hole stretch on Nos. 5-7. After eight straight pars, the Dundee, Scotland, native made birdie on his final hole of the tournament for a career-best finish.
Reily made birdie on his first hole of the day and followed that with another birdie on the par-4 fifth hole. Following three pars, he drained an eagle on the 415-yard, par-4 ninth hole and added his final birdie on No. 11 for his best finish of the season and his second straight Top-20 showing.
Sophomore Drew Murdock tied for 22nd at 216 while super senior Braxton Watkins tied for 31st 218 after shooting a 70 in the Final Round.
Redshirt freshman Ruben Lindsay and senior Nick Lindsay tied for 38th at 220 while sophomore Wolfgang Glawe tied for 46th at 221. Senior Marcus Wochner tied for 56th at 224.
Sam Houston State captured the team championship with a score of 839. Lamar and Oral Roberts tied for third at 855 with UT Arlington finishing fifth at 858.
Individually, Sam Houston's Bret Gray finished with a two-day total of 205 to earn medalist honors and finish three strokes ahead of Rice's Jay Kirchdorfer. De La Fuente tied for third with Lamar's Hugo Hellman, while Campbell joined Samual McKenzie (Sam Houston) and Daniel Cronje (UT Arlington) in a tie for fifth.

Following the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, Houston continues its spring slate when it tees off at the Cabo Collegiate at Twin Dolphin Club in Los Cabos, Mexico, on March 5-7.
Houston will also send individuals to compete at the HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational on March 6-7 at Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas.
From there, the Cougars play host to their own All-American Intercollegiate on March 20-21 at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
