Cougars improve to 6-3
LAFAYETTE, La. – The University of Houston Tennis program recorded its sixth win of the season with a 6-1 victory against Nicholls on Saturday from the Red Lerille's Health & Racquet Club on the campus of Louisiana.
The Cougars (6-3) started the day off strong against the Colonels (3-4), taking the doubles point, followed by five singles wins.
To win the doubles point, Houston's Elena Trencheva and Sophie Schouten teamed up to defeat Nicholls' Laura Lopez/Constanza Cruz, 7-6 (7-2). On court three, Sonya Kovalenko and Azul Pedemonti came out on top against Nicholls' Noemie Piquet/Simona Maksimovic, 6-0.
Following the doubles point, Houston continued its success as it moved into singles with Kovalenko earning the victory on court six defeating Piquet, 6-3, 6-3
On court one, Maria Dzemeshkevich earned her fourth singles victory of the season after defeating Sophia Safarova, 6-3, 6-4.
Houston earned two additional singles points with Slisane defeating Cruz 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 and Schouten outscoring Carla Bouygues, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2
In a tiebreaker, freshman Gabriela Cortes defeated Lopez on court five, 3-6, 6-4, 12-10 to seal the victory for the Cougars.
The Colonels' lone point of the match came on court two with Maksimovic defeating Trencheva, 6-3, 6-7 (5)
The Cougars are now 1-0 all-time against the Colonels.
UP NEXT
Houston will remain in Lafayette, La., to face Louisiana at 11 a.m., Sunday.
The Cougars will return to the friendly confines of the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility to face Louisiana Monroe on Saturday, at 11 a.m.
