
Fangli Earns Third, Houston Leads After Day Five of American Championships

Cougars set new personal bests, earn an NCAA B-Cut time on Friday
DALLAS – Sophomore Henrietta Fangli led the University of Houston Swimming & Diving program with a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday evening at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships Friday from the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
After the conclusion of the fifth day of competition, Houston leads with 972 points, followed by FIU (957), SMU (863), Rice (789), Cincinnati (586), East Carolina (505), Florida Atlantic (417), North Texas (364) and Tulane (283).
For a fifth day straight, Houston earned a spot on the podium after Fangli's third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.96. This time is a new personal best for the Târgu-Mures, Romania, native.
Freshman Virag Peter set a new personal best with a time of 1:00.71 to take fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke and now has the fourth fastest time in program history. The Pécs, Hungary, native, earned an NCAA B-Cut time in the process. Senior Audrey McKinnon set a new personal best, swimming a 1:01.63 for seventh place.
The Cougars earned a total of 64 points in the 400 IM with freshman Alondra Ortiz taking fourth (4:19.94) and freshman Landry Hadder (4:21.03) taking seventh place. Junior Sophie Anderson placed fourth (4:20.26) in the consolation final.
Houston continued to add points to its tally, earning 51 points in the 100-yard butterfly. In the consolation final, junior Abby Jackson took fourth (55.10), followed by freshman Noor El Gendy (5th; 55.20) and sophomore Adelaide Meuter (6th; 55.20).
Sophomore Abbie Alvarez took first in the 100-yard butterfly C-final by touching the wall at 54.50, earning the seventh fastest time in program history.
In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Eden Humphrey swam a 1:49.49 to take fifth, followed by sophomore Mary Catherine Jurica at 1:49.53 for sixth place. Senior Elizabeth Richardson swam a 1:50.56 to take third in the consolation final.
Senior Julia Koluch earned 13 points for the Cougars in the 100-yard back consolation final after taking sixth with a time of 55.97.
Houston ended the night in the 400-yard medley relay, taking 50 points after Koluch, Fangli, Alvarez and Jurica combined for a time of 3:39.53 to take fifth overall.
