Humphrey Wins 500-Yard Freestyle on Fourth Day of American Championships

Freshman Eden Humphrey earns NCAA B-Cut time
DALLAS – Freshman Eden Humphrey captured the University of Houston Swimming & Diving program's first swimming title of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday evening from the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

After the conclusion of the fourth day of competition, Houston leads with 653 points, followed by FIU (581), SMU (473), Rice (405), East Carolina (366), Florida Atlantic (300), Cincinnati (285), North Texas (241) and Tulane (168). The six-day event resumes at 10 a.m. Friday with swimming prelims followed by the finals at 6 p.m.
Humphrey earned her first American Athletic Conference title after swimming a season best 4.44.84. The Louisville, Ky., native, earned an NCAA B-Cut time in the process.
Rice's Lauren McDougall and Ella Dyson took second and third in the event with times of 4:45.37 and 4:48.07.

The Cougars added additional points in the event with sophomore Mary Catherine Jurica touching the wall at 4:54.87 to take eighth overall.
In the consolation 200-yard IM final, four Cougars added a combined total of 64 points. Freshman Virag Peter took first place (2:00.53), freshman Alondra Ortiz grabbed second (2:01.62), junior Sophie Anderson (2:03.19) placed fifth and senior Audrey McKinnon (2:03.33) secured sixth place.
