
Farris Takes Second on Third Day of American Championships, Earns Most Outstanding Diver Award

Chase Farris earns Women’s Most Outstanding Diver of the Year; Bob Gunter takes Women’s Diving Coach of the Year Honor
DALLAS – University of Houston Swimming & Diving senior Chase Farris closed out diving action with a second-place finish in the Platform event Wednesday on the third day of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships from the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
In addition to second place, Farris was named the 2023 American Women's Most Outstanding Diver after taking first in the 3-meter on Tuesday and second in the 1-meter on Monday. Houston's Diving Coach Bob Gunter earned Women's Diving Coach of the Year honors for a fourth consecutive year.
After the conclusion of day three, Houston leads with 469 points, followed by FIU (340), East Carolina (242), Florida Atlantic (230), SMU (194), North Texas (164), Cincinnati (115), Rice (110) and Tulane (90).
Farris finished with a five-dive score of 275.80. Her best dive came on the final attempt when she earned a score of 65.25 after completing a 5152B Forward 2 ½ Somersault 1 Twist Pike.
FIU's Maha Gouda took first with a score of 296.10, while SMU's Nicole Stambo earned the third spot on the podium with a score of 267.10.
The Cougars added additional points in the event with sophomore Josie Graves placing sixth (217.15) and senior Jolie Blodgett securing seventh place (287.30).
Houston swimmers opened action by placing sixth in the 200-yard medley relay thanks to Adelaide Meuter, Henrietta Fangli, Abbie Alvarez and Virag Peter (1:41.35). The Cougars took fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay powered by Mary Catherine Jurica, Elizabeth Richardson, Eden Humphrey and Alondra Ortiz with a time of 7:16.13.
