Junior Santiago De La Fuente tied for second at 3-under 144
LAREDO, Texas & HUMBLE, Texas – The University of Houston stood in third at +4 after play was suspended late in the Second Round of the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club on Monday night.
After posting a score of 291 in the morning round, the Cougars bettered that total by two strokes to stand in third with a score of 580 on the 7,204-yard, par-72 course.
Five teams had one or two holes remaining before play was halted. Those teams will resume play and finish their Second Rounds at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, with the Final Round to follow immediately after.
Junior Santiago De La Fuente posted a score of 3-under 141 to tie for second and lead the Cougars. De La Fuente started his spring season with a 2-under 70 in the First Round and followed with a 71 in the afternoon.
The Mexico City native began the spring with a birdie on the 582-yard, par-5 and closed his front nine with an eagle on the par-5 ninth hold.
Following a pair of bogeys on his first four holes of the back nine, De La Fuente closed his First Round with birdies on No. 14 and No. 18 to finish with a 70.
In the afternoon session, he birdied his first hole of the round again and added more birdies on No. 8 and No. 11 with his second eagle of the day, this time at No. 16.
Senior Austyn Reily was tied for seventh at even-par 144. After shooting a 73 in the First Round, the Pottsboro, Texas, native stood at +4 through 12 holes in the Second Round before staging a remarkable comeback.
Reily moved to +3 with a birdie on the 570-yard, par-5 13th hole and then closed his day with four straight birdies to return to even par.
Sophomore Wolfgang Glawe was tied for 14th at 145 while senior Marcus Wochner was tied for 57th at 152. Super senior Braxton Watkins was tied for 65th at 153.
Playing as individuals, super senior Campbell Gibson was tied for 37th at 149 while sophomore Drew Murdock was tied for 49th at 151. Redshirt freshman Ruben Lindsay was tied for 57th at 152.
HOUSTON CLASSIC
Three Cougars competed as individuals at the Houston Classic at Golf Club of Houston on Monday with senior Nick Sutton tying for fifth at 3-under 141 to lead Houston on the 6,945-yard, par-72 course.
Sutton opened the tournament hosted by Southern Nazarene with a 74 but rebounded with a bogey-free 67 in the Second Round.
Starting the afternoon session on No. 17, Sutton opened with nine straight pars before his first birdie on the par-3 seventh hole. Following two pars, he alternated birdies and pars on Nos. 12-13 before draining back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14-15.
Redshirt freshman Bryant Hiskey II and sophomore Jacob Borow were tied for 18th at 147. Hiskey posted an even-par 72 in the afternoon round while Borow opened the tournament with a 71.
