Senior guard LJ Cryer leads with 18 points; Senior forward J'Wan Roberts snares 11 rebounds
CHARLESTON, S.C. – University of Houston senior guard LJ Cryer led all players with 18 points as the sixth-ranked Cougars opened the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic with a 65-49 win over Towson inside TD Arena on Thursday evening.
In the first meeting between the two schools and their first appearance at the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic, the Cougars outrebounded the Tigers, 38-31, with 10 offensive boards and turned 10 Tiger turnovers into 16 points in the win.
In a close game early, the Cougars used a 16-2 run to turn an 8-5 advantage into a 24-7 lead midway through the opening half. Houston would never lead by fewer than 14 points for the rest of the way and pushed their lead to 25 in the second half.
Sophomore guard Emanuel Sharp finished with 14 points, thanks to three 3-pointers, and grabbed three rebounds while sophomore forward Ja'Vier Francis totaled 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting with three rebounds and an assist.
Senior forward J'Wan Roberts scored five points but led all players with 11 rebounds. Senior point guard Jamal Shead finished with nine points, eight assists, two steals and only one turnover in just more than 24 minutes of action.
Christian May was the only Tiger to reach double-digit points with 10 while Charles Thompson added a team-high nine rebounds.
With the win, Houston improved to 4-0 for the 17th time in school history. Towson dropped to 2-2.
